Robert Holley determined the complete sequence of the RNA of a bacteriophage called MS2.
1977
Frederick Sanger in England determined the entire sequence of the bacteriophage OX174.

The entire sequence of the HIV-1 genome was determined by Chiron Corp.

The first genome of a free living organism (Haemophilus
influenzae
) was completely sequenced.

The complete genome of the E. coli bacteria was sequenced.

The sequencing of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome was completed.

The first complete genome sequence of a multicellular organism (roundworm C. elegans) was published.
